Two New LEED AP staff at VDZ
Through the Fall and Winter, VDZ has been continuing to consult on projects pursuing LEED accreditation under Canadian Green Building Council. Both Mark van der Zalm - principal, and Jaki Lowe -intern BCSLA have successfully completed study and examination to become LEED AP. This designation confirms our committment to green and sustainable design and allows us to consult with knowledge and authority on development and public projects that seek this designation. All of our projects include a sustainable review lense by our staff, however - we have noticed an increase in formal LEED process for new projects. Inparticular, our public building work including: recreation centres, visitors centres, border crossings, and aquatic centres. VDZ is committed to sustainable design principals and in assisting our clients through regulatory, and program approvals.

Chuck Bailey Covered Youth Plaza awarded to VDZ
The city of Surrey has received a 1.5million dollar federal government incentive grant to complete a covered youth park for North Surrey. This park/plaza will be the first of its kind in the Lower Mainland and will feature an extensive covered area that compliments the iconographic architecture of the adjacent community centre building by CEI architects. VDZ's design work will coincide with architectural design development by CEI architects, and New Line skateparks. The design schematic has been approved and includes an extensive skate plaza, half court basketball, covered road hockey and mini-ramp area, skateable/rideable art plaza, water feature and other interesting features. The design strategy includes sustainable materials and integrated stormwater management.

Design Consulting for Fraserview Park - Vancouver
VDZ+A has been retained by the city of Vancouver Park Board for the design and redevelopment of Fraserview park. The park is located in Southeast Vancouver and is a much loved community ammenity. Public process work has already been initiated by Parks staff. VDZ+A will dovetail with these efforts to provide masterplan options to be presented to the public in February.

Grandview Park - Redevelopment, Vancouver
VDZ+A has been awarded the redevelopment consulting contract for Grandview Park in Vancouver. This park is the most used public park in the Vancouver parks system. Its location withing the commercial drive neighbourhood makes it a central meeting point for residents, remembrance day ceremonies, demonstrations, and other 'happenings'. The redevelopment of the park will include a 'green' washroom building, childrens spash park, renovated play ground, cenotaph upgrades, and new walkways, lighting, and performance space. Consulting work has been initiated with presentations to parks board anticipated for March, 2010.

Langley Prairie Neighbourhood Park
VDZ has been retained by the city of Langley to prepare concept plans for the Langley Praire Neighbourhood Park. This project includes the conversion of a closed school site into a small park with a neighbouring multi-family development site also being completed by VDZ. Concept work begins immediately with public open house anticipated in April.

Trillium Park - Vancouver * Synthetic Turf field construction
After a lengthy period of public consultation, design, environmental assessment, and working drawings, VDZ is pleased to announce that the construction tender for two synthetic turf fields will be made public this week. Contractors will be solicited for pricing on the construction/civil works for the fields. Work is expected to continue through to Fall 2010.

Arlington, Texas - City Wide Skate Strategy
VDZ has been selected as the consulting team responsible for conducting public process and city-wide strategic planning for a new skate opportunities plan in Arlington, Texas. VDZ is pleased to be leading this effort as the first significant effort to integrate skateboarding into the overall city parks masterplan. Public process will begin in June and the final strategic plan will incorporate an advisory committee of staff, youth, and other public stakeholders. The strategic plan is widely anticipated as a method for future budget planning, and site selection for skateboarding opportunities in Arlington. Richmond Park : Edmonds town centre Plaza
VDZ is working closely with the city of Burnaby to finalize the design concept for a significant public open space in the Edmonds neighbourhood. This plaza will serve as a town centre meeting place and will foster public ceremonies, farmers market, cultural celebrations, and informal play and socializing. Design work is currently underway with completion slated for later this summer. Construction is hoped to cooincide with the new Aquatic Centre at Eastburn.

Clearbrook Women's Housing : BC Housing Initiative - LEED Silver
VDZ is working with BC Housing to prepare landscape development plans for a new LEED Silver/Gold Facility in Abbotsford. This facility will provide therepeutic horticulture opportunities, as well as social spaces for renewal and contemplation. Unique aspects of the project include edible landscapes, and a working mini-farm on site. The design drawings are 90% complete with construction slated for later this year.

New Design Staff Member: Stephen Heller intern BCSLA
VDZ is pleased to welcome Stephen Heller to our design team. Stephen comes to VDZ from Alberta by way of Guelph, Ontario and the esteemed landscape architecture program there. Stephen has strong technical skills supplemented by formal training at NAIT. He is an intern landscape architect with the BCSLA and will be assisting with all aspects of project development.

Tawanamis Artificial Turf Field Hockey Facility
VDZ will be the prime consultant responsible for confirming the site masterplan for Tawanamis park. The masterplan process will lead into detailed design for the an additional artificial turf field. Other ammenities planned for the site, are a new field house, perimeter trail and other infrastructure improvements. Work begins immediately with tendering scheduled for November. VDZ will lead a team of engineers and geo-scientists to create a full package of design and technical drawings.

Newton Athletic Park Masterplan Process
VDZ has been retained by the city of Surrey to review the park masterplan for Newton Athletic Park. Through the public process an updated plan will be created. At the conclusion of the process, VDZ will work with our engineering consultants to design a new stormwater detention pond, and championship cricket pitch. Design and public process begins in September 2010 with construction of the Cricket pitch expected in Spring 2011.
